The story of how a young Donald Trump started a real estate business in the 1970s and 1980s in New York with the help of the infamous lawyer Roy Cohn. Roger Stone, a longtime associate of Donald Trump and Roy M. Cohn, admitted that Jeremy Strong’s portrayal of Cohn was “uncanny in its accuracy.” [From Trailer] Roy Cohn: Rule Three: No matter what happens, claim victory and never admit defeat. When “The Apprentice” (2024 release; 120 inches) opens, it’s the early 1970s and handyman and repairman Roy Cohn sees a young Donald Trump in a restaurant window. For reasons that are unclear and never really explained, Cohn decides to take Trump under his wing, making Trump an “apprentice.” We’re less than 10 minutes into the movie at this point. A few comments: This is the latest Iranian director Ali Abbasi. (“Frontier”). It brings to the big screen the period of Trump’s life, which lasts about 15 years (1972-1987). If you’ve been following politics in this country for the past 9 years, starting with Trump coming down the escalators at Trump Tower to announce his candidacy for president, nothing in the movie comes as much of a surprise because it simply (re)confirms what we know. about Trump. The magic is that it is delivered as if you were a fly on the wall. Not much can be said about Sebastien Stan’s incredible performance, whose authenticity will surprise you. The rest of the cast is also fantastic, including Jeremy Strong (as Cohn) and up-and-coming Bulgarian actress Maria Bulkova (as Ivan). Also, kudos to the filmmakers for recreating 1970s and 1980s New York It won’t surprise you when I mention that this movie is being disparaged by Trump and MAGA extremists (without actually seeing the movie, of course). Trump’s lawyers did everything to prevent the film from being released in the US, but to no avail. The Apprentice premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and was an instant hit. The movie currently has a 77% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and that seems about right to me. The movie opened in US theaters this weekend and I couldn’t wait to see it. The Saturday matinee where I saw it at an arthouse theater here in Cincinnati was well attended, with about 25-30 people in attendance. If you are interested in knowing what Trump was like 40-50 years ago, I easily recommend you check it out and draw your own conclusions.
